Solo record?
I had been calling it the "acoustic" record, but that's not really an accurate description any more. But it is true that I have been working away on a collection of non-Polara songs. In early April I had a few days off and I decided to demo a bunch of new ideas I had rattling around in my head. I did everything very quickly with just acoustic guitar and vocal, and it became clear that this material did not sound or feel like Polara. I decided to follow the thread, and now after a total of about eight or nine days of studio work I have an album recorded. I played everything myself and kept a lot of first or second takes. There are around fifteen songs done, eleven of which will make the final record. Of course many of you will ask "don't you already have a new Polara record in the can?". Others may ask "is this the end of Polara?". Well, we do have a Polara record almost finished, and we will absolutely be releasing it and playing shows behind it. The solo record has a certain internal momentum to it, though, and I've decided to ride that through and finish what has been an unexpected and energizing project. This group of songs is very personal and conversational in tone, and the nature of the material directed the tone of the production. Sonically it's somewhat of a departure from the Polara sound, musically much less dense. I was determined to keep the number of elements on each track to a minumum, so most songs have one or two (mostly non-electric) guitars, some sort of percussion, maybe a bass, and often some strange incidental sounds. If you've ever wondered what I sound like behind the clouds of fuzz and haze of reverb, this record will tell you. Hope you like what you hear. I don't know exactly when or how this record will be released. I'll let you know when I do.
